It was my freshman year of college. I think it was on a Sunday. I heard this loud music coming from across the hallway of my apartment building. I would later find out this was Secret Annese. I would also find that the trumpet player would be nixxed. So sorry Catrina, but who were you trying to fool with a name like that anyway (being from Louisiana and all... JUST KIDDING, MUCH LOVE!)
5 years later I got the album entitled "Seven Headed Monster" in the mail. I have to say I'm flattered to have known on a personal basis, such a great band. Based in Baton Rouge, LA, Secret Annexe is a 7-piece folk/indie-rock outfit with players on keys and viola, atop your standard bass/drums/guitar set-up. Mulhearn's lyrics are incredibly honest, especially on the track entitled "The Bridge." (about moving to Austin, TX and eventually back to his home in Baton Rouge, LA) His lyrics are enjoyable stand-alone, as they take a different shape as words on paper. (Ex. "June 12, 1943") Cheers to Secret Annexe and Congratulations to Ocelot Records for such an important release.
